It's the question almost all our clients ask at the start: 'Should we do Meta Ads or Google Ads?' The honest answer is: it depends—but not in the way you think.
The fundamental distinction isn't a matter of budget or company size. It's a question ofyour future customer's mindset at the moment they see your ad..
The fundamental difference: intent vs. interruption.
Google Ads (Search) targets people actively looking for something. They type 'performance agency ads Paris' or 'buy men's running shoes'. They have intent. Your ad answers an expressed need.
Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram) Interruptions targeted at people who are not actively looking. As users scroll through their feeds to entertain themselves or stay connected with loved ones, your ads create demand or bring latent desires to the surface.
Summary: Google captures existing intent; Meta creates it. These two logics serve different situations.
Google Ads — Strengths
- Captures real-time purchase intent
- Higher conversion rates (strong intent)
- Excellent coverage across every stage of the funnel
- High-impact Shopping Ads for e-commerce
- Massive Display Network for retargeting
- Ideal for considered, high-value purchases
When to Choose Meta Ads
e-Commerce with Visual Products
Fashion, home decor, cosmetics, food... Products that 'sell themselves' perform exceptionally well on Meta. Purchases can be impulsive and emotional.
Precision B2B Lead Generation with Targeted Profiles
Meta can help reach B2B decision-makers through messaging, creatives, audience signals, and journey qualification. CPL should be compared against equivalent sales quality, as it varies significantly by market.
Local business with geographic targeting
For restaurants, aesthetic centers, gyms, and more. Meta's ultra-precise geographic targeting and local formats (promotions, events) are highly effective.
Product launch or new offer introduction
When no one is yet looking for your product (because it doesn't exist in their minds), Meta is the only way to create that demand.
When to choose Google Ads
Services with strong search intent
"Plombier Paris urgence", "avocat droit du travail Lyon"... When a client actively seeks an urgent solution, Google Search is unbeatable.
High-ticket products or services
For purchases over €5,000, clients conduct comparative research; Google captures these high-intent searches at the decisive moment, while Meta builds awareness but rarely drives final conversion.
Replenishment products
If your client regularly seeks out the same type of product (office supplies, consumables), being present on Google Shopping guarantees visibility at the moment of purchase.
The real answer: both, but not simultaneously
For the vast majority of businesses, Meta Ads and Google Ads are complementary, not competing. The question isn't 'which one to choose' but 'which one first with my current budget'. Our guide fordefining a realistic Meta Ads budget ] Helps decide on this first allocation.
Our budget-based recommendation:
- Under 1,000€/month → Choose a single platform: Meta for e-commerce or B2B lead generation. Google Search if you offer a service with high search intent.
- 1,000€ to 3,000€/month → Start with Meta to build awareness and audiences. Add Google Retargeting to capture visitors from your site.
- 3,000€+/month → Omnichannel strategy: Meta for acquisition and awareness, Google Search to capture intent, and Google Shopping if you're in e-commerce.
Mistake to avoid: splitting a small budget between the two platforms. 500€ on Meta and 500€ on Google is insufficient on both. Focus your budget where it will be most effective for your situation.
